Update March 18, 2020
I shared encouragement from Deuteronomy 6 with our teachers this week.
6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
This season I hope to be more focused on exactly this: sharing what is most valuable with my kiddos. My almost 20 year old needs to see me remember and live Jesus as much as my 10 year old does. Because I know people who used to walk close with Jesus but not anymore, and unfortunately, you probably do too. We NEED to keep learning and growing.
So -- two things: Children's Church and Sunday School.
Children's Church: During our livestream service, there will be a Children's Bible story when children are normally dismissed from the service. Observe, ask questions, and invite your kids to engage and even talk out loud while they watch that portion. At the end they will be encouraged to respond by writing or drawing about the story.
Sunday School: I'm sending a home lesson for you. Thank you, Kyle Mellander.
Now, before you implement this lesson (and I hope hope hope you do!) let me give you a dose of possible reality from my house just this week.
It may take you 20 minutes just to get everyone gathered in one place.
Once gathered they will need a bathroom break. Or they want their slime from the other room. Or there will be disagreements about seating arrangements or who's turn it is.
Their enthusiasm for being gathered may be less than ideal. Their interest in getting done and moving on or returning to their own stuff may feel oppressive. Your hope in this good thing you want to do may diminish.
You aren't alone. GOD IS PRESENT. All the time everywhere. GOD IS GRACIOUS AND LOVING. To you and to your people, whoever they are, whatever age they are.
Watch out for another Children's Moment in the livestream the following week and another Sunday school lesson!
I am praying grace and peace and hope and wisdom for your family.
